Product Details

This rutabaga (AKA swede) has an attractive purple top, an ivory base and fine yellow flesh. Laurentian looks great on winter market tables. The 10-15cm (4-6") roots keep very well in winter storage, and add rich flavour to soups and stews. Laurentian rutabaga seeds have been grown in the Pacific Northwest for decades, and have proven themselves to be ideal for both farms and home gardeners. Rutabagas are a wonderful old-world winter standby.

Lime beds several weeks before planting. Rutabagas appreciate lots of organic matter in the soil. Water generously in hot, dry weather.

Pull up rutabagas when they are larger than tennis balls. Store in paper bags in a cool, dry place. Storing in dry sand or peat moss may conserve moisture and freshness. Otherwise, leave in the ground for fall harvesting. Rutabaga leaves are also tasty and nutritious.
