Soil testing can help you determine the relative acidity (pH) of your soil, and also if any of the key soil nutrients are lacking or over-abundant. This can help you understand which soil amendments to use and in what quantity. Soil that is too acidic or too base might be fertile, but most plants will not be able to take up soil nutrients in those conditions. Because of the heavy rain our coastal gardens receive, soil is likely going to grow more acidic over time. As well, nitrogen washes out of soil quite quickly, and all soil nutrients are drawn out of the soil each time you harvest. Use this simple soil testing equipment to get a good general idea of how you can adjust your soil to improve your crop production.
