Create a butterfly garden that supports butterflies through their entire life cycle: eggs, larvae, pupae and adult butterflies. While caterpillars need host plants which they will eat, adult butterflies need nectar sources to use as food as well as host plants to lay their eggs. Most butterflies will eat from a variety of nectar sources, whereas some caterpillars like Monarchs need a particular host plant like Milkweed to use as forage. Choosing the variety native to your region will be the most beneficial to your local pollinators: Swamp Milkweed (prairies and Eastern Canada), Butterfly Weed (QC and ON) or Showy Milkweed (prairies and BC).
