High-quality seeds produced beautiful, bright clover

Note: Photos taken approximately 6-7 weeks after spreading seeds and show the coverage achieved on first pass, *without* adding any additional seed to thinner or missed areas. (You can see how tall a few straggling pieces of grass have grown in comparison—a good reminder of all the mowing we used to have to do!)

We sowed the clover in mid-April, after the risk of frost had passed in our area. Since the weather was still pretty chilly, it took a good week for the seeds to germinate, but as soon as the weather warmed up, things progressed nicely. By the end of May, the clover had filled in beautifully. It’s lush and vibrant, and is standing up better than expected to light foot traffic, raking and contact with garden equipment (heavy hose, large stepladder). Sparse patches left after the initial seeding had filled in considerably by the 4-5 week mark. We were able to achieve ~80% coverage on our first pass, despite spreading the seeds by hand and without using any specialized equipment. One bag of seed was more than enough to completely replace approx. 200 sq feet of grass in our backyard. We spread the seeds very generously and still have at least half of the bag left over.

We opted for a full clover lawn rather than a mix of clover and grass (though the odd blade managed to escape digging-up), and have had no issues with durability so far. The new clover has the lush, dense look of an immaculately maintained grass lawn, and has required essentially no labour beyond regular watering during the first couple weeks of growth. We live in an area with moderately alkaline soil, and the clover is thriving anyway. It is already performing better than our grass lawn, including staying remarkably lush during a week of very hot, dry weather. Though it’s a bit early to know for sure, it does seem that the weeds that used to thrive in our grass lawn are having more difficulty gaining traction in the clover. They are few and far between, despite the fact that we’ve done essentially no weeding since planting the clover.

We are extremely pleased with the results and would enthusiastically recommend these seeds to anyone wanting to grow a dense, vibrant and resilient clover lawn.

Pelleted Micro Clover Seeds

Product Details

Trifolium repens var. Pipolina. This is the raw, non-pelleted version of Micro Clover Seed (LS801). More and more home owners are seeing the advantages of supplementing grass lawns with Micro Clover, or seeding Micro Clover in damaged patches of their lawns where soil is exposed.

As a legume, Micro Clover fixes atmospheric nitrogen in nodes along its roots. This directly benefits grasses by fertilizing the soil naturally. Healthier grasses maintain a richer colour for longer in the season, and require less water and fertilizer. Clover grows densely so it crowds out weeds, and prevents weed seeds from becoming established. It is also a good option for homeowners whose lawns have been infested by European chafer beetles. Adult chafer beetles are not attracted to legumes and will go elsewhere to lay their eggs.

Contrary to what its name implies, Micro Clover is not simply a tiny version of standard clover. When Micro Clover is mowed, its leaves grow smaller and more numerous, with fewer flowers than conventional clovers. It becomes established more quickly and can be mowed shorter than typical lawn grasses. It will also stand up to foot (and pet) traffic. Once established, Micro Clover is more drought tolerant than grasses and require less frequent watering.

If starting a lawn from scratch, use 5% Micro Clover of the total weight of the grass seed being sown.

Micro Clover is hardy to Zone 3.

NOTE: Over-seeding existing lawn may not work, as the seeds need to be in contact with moist soil in order to germinate.
