I joined the team of West Coast Seeds in December of 2023 as the Product Manager with the goal of creating a comprehensive assortment of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds that addresses the needs and desires of our diverse community of growers.
I used my 25 years of experience in agriculture, in the seed industry and as a market grower, to produce a list of varieties, from the practical to the whimsical, to achieve this goal. My criteria for these new varieties:
- Widely adaptable, high-quality standards, like main season cabbages and bunching carrots that perform well throughout Canada, offering the best opportunity for a successful harvest for gardeners and market growers alike.
- Feature types of well-known crops that are ideal for growing in small spaces and on farms. Mini lettuce varieties, which mature 2-3 weeks earlier and take up less space than standard size heads and offer an exciting selection of leaf shapes and colours. Sprouting broccoli that can be grown spring through fall producing more food in less space. A personal-size butternut and melon that provide an impressive harvest from just one plant.
- Add some pizzazz to our ornamental varieties with a series of colourful pumpkins that are deliciously edible, some uniquely coloured winter squash that looks fantastic on display, and some fall gourds that are purely just for fun.
- Lots and lots of flowers for cut fresh and dried bouquets, including individual colours of Sweet Peas, Snapdragons, and Strawflowers to create the palette of your choosing.
- Replace varieties that are no longer available from our suppliers to ensure we have what you need in stock.
- Improved varieties that offer better disease resistance, earlier maturity, productivity, and flavour.
- More organic options.
It is with great excitement that we share with you nearly 150 new additions to our lineup. Look for the βNEWβ icon as you browse through our catalogue to find them all.
