Gypsophila muralis. It's no surprise this compact annual won the 2018 AAS award. Gypsy White Improved produces copious semi-double flowers in dense arrays over tightly packed mounds of foliage. The clumping, rounded plants grow to 25cm (10") tall, blooming from spring through the summer. The unusually large (for Gypsophila) white flowers start blushing to pink at the end of the season, creating the look of a Laura Ashley print. This plant works really well in containers, smaller spaces, and garden beds. It was a definite hit from our field trials, catching the eyes of visitors and flower judges alike.

Note that the Babyโs Breath one associates with bridal bouquets is grown (mainly in Mexico) in very controlled settings, and harvested with precision just as the flower buds begin to open. This is the same flowering plant, but it is difficult to predict exactly when the plants will be bouquet-ready. To grow for summer weddings, direct sow large amounts at regular three week intervals starting in early spring when there is still a risk of frost. That would be mid-March here on the coast. Keep plants relatively crowded. This is the only way to ensure that at least some Babyโs Breath will be at its peak for your special event.
